Inspired by the Egyptian mathematician-astronomer of the same name, is a Toronto based architectural design firm by Sean Brown and Canan Iscan specializing in space making.
With our living spaces becoming increasingly more multi-dimensional, there is a pressing need for design to expand beyond aesthetics and consider human interaction, inspiration, and output as part of ‘space making’.
The first project from HYPATIA is an apartment series—living at the intersection of function and design. Function in this case takes into consideration flow of traffic pertaining to a flow of energy, noise pollution, sustainability, storage, mood, and mental well-being. Emphasizing intent behind each use of a space means placing the workspace away from living space, ensuring ample natural light, creating cohesive entertaining space, considering how light hits each corner of the apartment, positioning noisy spaces away from places of rest, leaving room at the front door for people to reset before entering the space.
“Function in this case takes into consideration flow of traffic pertaining to a flow of energy, noise pollution, sustainability, storage, mood, and mental well-being.”
HYPATIA’s goal is to cultivate a new era of living by breaking old habits of design. We question everything, reevaluate traditional rules, pick apart every tradition, with the understanding that we can only bring the best practices into the future.
Single Dwellers MOD A 1B-1B (Above)
Reflecting our ethos of simplicity and quality-of-life, this entry level apartment is designed for a single dweller, where creativity and function intersect.
Shared Living MOD C 2B-2B (Above)
In this distinctive linear layout, where the appliances are hidden in the kitchen, bathroom and beyond, you’re drawn into a world of function and minimalism curated for a group of roommates or small family. Spacious open-plan living cleverly separates cozy individual areas through a clever use of space.
Experimental MOD D 2B-2B (Above)
Our spaces encompass emotional, physical, material, and social well-being, simultaneously maximizing space and human potential. All modules are designed with mindfulness, intent and square footage for actual people (us). Each module comes with modification options to create a safe apartment that is accessible to those with disabilities, and moreover, inclusive to residents’ needs without compromising design.
